You visit the hospital where you’ve booked in to have the baby, for a tour and ante-natal class.

It’s a special class for multiples, so they skip all the fuzzy stuff and cut to the chase. Your experience will be different from mothers of singletons and forewarned is forearmed.

You know that gorgeous spa and double shower in the birthing suite that sold you on this hospital. Forget it. You can tell hubby to leave his Speedos at home.

No water sports for you, you’ll be hooked up to fetal monitors to keep an eye on the little ones.

You learn about the signs of pre-term labour and wonder how you’ll ever tell the difference between early labour and Braxton Hicks.

Believe me, you will. A caesarean is a very real possibility as is an epidural (pain relief administered in your spine) and episiotomy (stitches in your nether-regions).

It’s time to start carrying the number of the hospital’s labour ward in your wallet, and post it on the fridge for DH.

Make sure you use red ink and BIG numbers. (You still haven’t forgotten the tomato sauce incident where DH swore there was none in the pantry until YOU looked and found one open and two spares. A scenario which has repeated itself endlessly over a range of household condiments.)

You’ve come to terms with the fact you’re going to be mum to two little boys, and decided there are a lot of great things about boys. Besides it now gives you a legitimate excuse to leave toilet training to DH.

People are starting to walk past you in the street and instead of the standard heads down approach, they are looking you in the eye and smiling.

Congratulations and welcome to the society of mums-to-be.

You are suddenly everybody’s friend. The twin thing also makes you a curiosity piece so be prepared for friends’ to loan you out to their school-age children for show and tell.
